  • 10 ounces fresh strawberries
  • 34 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • Zest from 1/2 lemon (optional)
  • 1/2 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • 2 cups cold milk

Instructions

  1. Hull and chop 6 ounces of strawberries. Mash them in a bowl until crushed.
  2. Mix in sugar, lemon zest, and lemon juice if using.
  3. Transfer the mixture to a small pot over medium-low heat. Simmer for 2-5 minutes until thickened into syrup.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract if desired. Allow to cool at room temperature.
  5. Dice the remaining strawberries.
  6. In serving glasses, divide the cooled syrup, top with diced strawberries, and fill with cold milk. Stir well before serving.
